Tell us, what is it you love most about blogging?
I love the challenge of putting together new looks (whether recycling old clothes or adopting new trends) and sharing them with my fellow fashion enthusiasts. It’s always fun to connect with other bloggers who share the same hobby, but with a different point of view. Like most bloggers, I love the creative outlet that blogging provides and it’s also an outlet for me to face the fear of being judged by my outward appearance. That’s why connecting with readers is so rewarding. It makes me feel like my personality (who I really am) is shining through.
How would you describe your style in three words?
Casual, classic and colourful.
Where do you draw your fashion inspiration from?
I can find inspiration in just about anything, including the imperfect things in life. I see myself as imperfect, so when I find other women who confidently embrace their flaws, this inspires me to enjoy being me (flaws and all). Because my style is very colorful, I often get ideas for print and pattern pairings from kids’ clothing lines (Crew Cuts is my fave). I also love to browse Pinterest, brand catalogues and beauty/fashion magazines. A few of my fashion icons include Zoe Saldana, Olivia Palermo and Jenna Lyons.
Do you have one wardrobe item you couldn’t live without?
Besides my supportive husband, distressed jeans and my go-to flats, I can’t live without my Mac lipsticks in ‘Crème Cup’ or ‘Angel’ – I wear both like a chapstick every single day. And if we’re including accessories, my Fitbit is my latest addiction (can’t wait to get the new Tory Burch bands!).
Mixing colors, patterns and prints can be tricky – what are your tips for making it all work?
I always look for balance when mixing prints and patterns. Balance in the colors typically means including a neutral (yes, even if it’s leopard!). Stripes are my no-fail option when trying a new pattern/print pairing because it’s easy to balance shapes (florals, polka dots, etc.) with lines. I’ve gotten a little tired of gingham lately because I think it’s overused in the fashion blogosphere, but there’s definitely an art to not overdoing it, whatever the combination is. That said, when I’m going for a bold look and trying something new, I have to put my courage into overdrive and just go for it.
What is the most memorable fashion purchase you have made?
This is a tough one. I love when I make a purchase and the item becomes a wardrobe staple. Not only will I get my money’s worth, but I feel great every time I wear that item. I especially love if the item is unique. I typically find my most unique (and most memorable) tops from Anthropologie. But my last most memorable purchase was the Tory Burch ‘Plaque Satchel’ I scored at the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale. I feel like royalty when I carry that bag and I didn’t even pay full price for it!
For someone starting to build their wardrobe, what are three must-have items you would suggest to invest in?
1. A great-fitting pair of distressed denim (whether skinny or boyfriend jeans).
2. A bright lipstick (I wear St. Germain by Mac on the regular. It’s the right amount of bright pink for me, but also compliments my skin tone.).
3. A neutral (black or brown), genuine leather handbag (it doesn’t have to be designer, but I highly recommend investing in a Michael Kors, Tory Burch or Madewell bag–you’ll carry it for a long time before it ever goes out of style!).
4. Bonus item–anything leopard! :)
If you could go on a vacation tomorrow, where would you go?
Maui. No question about it. I was fortunate enough to live in Maui a few years ago and I can’t get enough of it. Every time we plan a vacation, I feel like I should try something new, but my heart will always be in Maui.
What would be your advice to an aspiring fashion blogger?
Learn from your fellow fashion bloggers, but don’t pay too much attention to them. You have to be yourself to be different. It’s okay to adopt trends even if followers think you’re copying other bloggers. Just don’t get caught up in comparing yourself (your body, your style or your income) to others. Most of all, don’t be afraid to TRY.
Just for fun, if there was a movie to be made about your life, which celebrity would you want to play you?
Probably someone spunky like Cameron Diaz. I can’t call her my doppelganger, but I love her style and free-spirited personality. And she’s super fit…something I’ll continue to strive for until I die. ;)
