Glam Girl: Krystin from Suburban Faux-Pas

We’re very excited for you to meet our Glam Girl: Krystin from Suburban Faux-Pas, a 27-year-old Toronto-based fashion blogger. A city girl at heart, Krystin’s look is colorful, glamorous and anything but boring!  We love her eclectic sense of style and ability to combine patterns and color – she always look incredibly chic while doing so.  Read on to discover more about Krystin, her style inspirations and best beauty tips…

 photo Krystin5EDITED_zps00496048.jpg

What motivated you to start your blog?
A city girl at heart, when my husband and I bought our house in the suburbs, I started the blog to prove that regardless of a postal code, style can prevail! (Yes, even in the suburbs!)

How does the city you live in inspire your day-to-day fashion?
Now that I live and work in the suburbs, it can be difficult to draw inspiration. I look to Pinterest, Tumblr, magazines, fashion blogs and street style when I’m in Toronto to remind me of what else is out there.

Who are your style icons?
While there are a handful of socialites, fashion bloggers and classic names I have always admired, my mom has always been a constant source of inspiration for me. She’s never afraid to take risks or shy away from colour and I love it!

 photo Krystin1EDITED_zpsf46012b9.jpg
Name one piece every woman should have in her wardrobe and why?
Just one would be tough but I’d probably say a great pair of black pumps. They’re versatile, classic and can take most outfits up a notch.

What items do you always carry in your handbag?
Wallet, personal phone, work phone, business cards, gum, bobby pins, MAC lipstick, nail file, pen, notebook, keys, backup charger… I could go on ;)

 photo Krystin4EDITED_zps8b7dde4e.jpg

What is the best beauty trick you’ve ever learned?
If you dab white shimmer eye shadow above the middle of your top lip, you can make your lips seem fuller and more rounded.

Tell us…what is something not many people know about you?
I used to play drums in an all boy band!

What are your favourite prints or colors to mix? Do you have any tips?
There are few colours or patterns I shy away from :) Some personal favourite combos are pink and red, leopard print and yellow or bold stripes with an accent colour.

When you need a little pick-me-up, how do you add sparkle to your life and feel good?
I’ve recently gotten into the habit of buying fresh flowers for our house. I love the fresh dose of color it breathes into the space!

How do you start your day? Do you have a morning routine?
I am definitely not a morning person! I must hit the snooze button 3 times before I actually get going and then I’m typically in a mad rush. Needless to say, my beauty routine is typically quite simple and relaxed during the work week. Oh and coffee is a MUST!

Fringe Benefits

We’ve been noticing a trend emerging – the fringe is making its way back into the limelight and we have to admit we kinda like it.  A little bit bohemian and a little bit country – you can easily inject this trend into your current wardrobe by adding a fringed accessory such as a handbag or boot or you can keep your eye out for a vintage fringed jacket next time you are wandering through the flea market or your favorite thrift store.

Wardrobe Essential: Trench Coat

A well fitting trench coat is an essential in any fashionista’s wardrobe. The versatility of being able to wear over a printed silk dress or just as easily over a pair of jeans and a tee makes this one wardrobe item that can go a long way. Choosing the right type of trench coat is easy if you follow two simple rules: go for a traditional color such as beige or black and choose a classic cut that won’t date. This will ensure you have a gorgeous coat to wear for years to come.

If you are in the mood for snapping up a bargain, how about taking a peek at the trench coats currently available on Bloggers Closet. Happy shopping…

Glam Girl: Cee Fardoe

We’re very excited to introduce our newest Glam Girl, 28-year-old Cee Fardoe from Vancouver, Canada.  Cee writes the beautifully Parisian flavoured blog Coco & Vera where she writes of her time spent between her hometown and Paris.  Cee’s style is simple and elegant and inspired by her surroundings.  Read on as she shares with us her style inspirations, her must have items and her best beauty tips…

 photo Cee2EDITED_zps250b385e.jpg

What motivated you to start your blog?
I started my blog in June 2010. I’ve always loved fashion but, working in the finance industry, I didn’t have a lot of room to express that in my daily life. Coco & Vera started as a way for me to connect with people who shared my passion. And as a way to show that being stylish doesn’t mean being frivolous!

How does the city you live in inspire your day-to-day fashion?
I live in Vancouver but travel back-and-forth to Paris quite a bit, and actually spent all of last year there. The two cities have very different aesthetics. It’s hard not to feel inspired to dress up in Paris, a fashion capital with so many amazing designers, both new and old. Vancouver is a lot more casual – a beanie, khaki jacket, skinnies and booties is a daily uniform for a lot of people. But there is a real burgeoning fashion community here and being part of that inspires me to dress in a way that I love, even if it doesn’t always align with the local look.

 photo Cee3EDITED_zpse8aace4d.jpg

Who are your style icons?
There are so many. I really admire anyone whose style is both effortless and elegant, because those are the things that I strive for in my own outfits. For celebrity style, I love Marion Cotillard. And my favourite blogger is Sara of Harper & Harley – she wears black, white and gray beautifully.

Name one piece every woman should have in her wardrobe and why?
Classic black pumps. And a good pair is absolutely worth investing in – I love my Christian Louboutin Pigalle pumps. Shoes are often the last piece of an outfit that we think about. And when nothing else in your shoe collection seems quite right, you can always reach for them. A good pair will actually make all of your outfits look better!

 photo Cee1EDITED_zpsa806e45d.jpg

What items do you always carry in your handbag?
I never leave home without a tube of lipstick – I’m loving Chanel’s Rivoli right now – and my iPhone. Can’t live without it!

What is the best beauty trick you’ve ever learned?
Never underestimate the power of a good concealer. This isn’t a trick so much as it is something that’s easy to forget – but the right formula can be the difference between looking like you’ve been up all night and looking like you’ve just been on a week-long vacation. I swear by Estee Lauder concealers; they work miracles.

Tell us…what is something not many people know about you?
I’m a pretty open book…! But it might surprise some people to know that although I’m neutrals girl now, when I was little, my favourite colour was purple. There was a period of time when I refused to wear any other colour!

 photo Cee4EDITED_zps25311e6a.jpg

What are your favourite prints or colors to mix? Do you have any tips?
I love neutrals. Most of my outfits are made up of a combination of black and white pieces, sometimes with a bit of denim mixed in. So many people think black and white are boring, but as far as I’m concerned, that couldn’t be further from the truth. Style is all in the details – if you love colours, that’s great. But if you don’t, statement jewelry and textured fabrics are both great ways to give more visual interest to a neutral outfit.

When you need a little pick-me-up, how do you add sparkle to your life and feel good?
This is kind of silly, but when I really need a pick me up, I make a bowl of popcorn and put on a Disney movie – usually Pocahontas or The Many Adventures of Winnie-the-Pooh. Cheers me up every time!

How do you start your day? Do you have a morning routine?
My morning starts with yoga – it’s so nice to take a bit of time for myself when it’s quiet to relax and contemplate and just be, before the work day starts. I usually follow it up with a cup of Earl Gray tea and a fresh fruit smoothie.

Color Me: Black

It was Coco Chanel who said ‘Black has it all’ and we couldn’t agree more. There is something incredibly chic about an all black ensemble that can’t be recreated with another shade or color. One of the most versatile colors, black can be worn day or night and can be pushing-the-boundaries-edgy or classic and clean depending on how you style it.

{Style Insider Tip}  Next time you opt for an all-in-black outfit, experiment with texture. Try to introduce textures you might not traditionally find together. You might just stumble across a winning combination!

What motivated you to start your blog?
My husband did. I was starting to read a few blogs a little over a year ago, and I loved fashion and working out. He encouraged me to start one myself to share my love of these with others.

How does the city you live in inspire your day-to-day fashion?
There are so many great restaurants with patios and events going on near my house downtown, especially in the summer. Most of them are within walking distance, and I love being outdoors. You will find me in sandals and casual dresses a lot in the summer.

Who are your style icons?
Olivia Palermo, Reese Witherspoon, Gwyneth Paltrow and Jenna Lyons.

Name one piece every woman should have in her wardrobe and why?
A great pair of leather pumps that make her feel like a million bucks.

What items do you always carry in your handbag?
Everything! My wallet, my iPhone, my Brittany Fuson planner, my camera, sunglasses, 3 YSL lipsticks, 2 watches and hand sanitizer.

 photo Memphis6EDITED_zps3ce3fc17.jpg

What is the best beauty trick you’ve ever learned?
To rinse your hair with cold water after you have washed it. It makes it so much shinier!

Tell us…what is something not many people know about you?
I was a gymnast and cheerleader for about 10 years. I miss it every single day, but I still constantly tumble at the gym and can still do every single backhand spring and back tuck I used to do.

What are your favourite prints or colors to mix? Do you have any tips?
Florals and stripes will always be one of my favorite classics to mix.

 photo Memphis4EDITED_zps71edce1a.jpg

When you need a little pick-me-up, how do you add sparkle to your life and feel good?
I took a walk to get some fresh flowers from the store yesterday. It always makes me feel so much better when I have bright colored flowers in the house.

How do you start your day? Do you have a morning routine?
At 5:00am, I am up and feeding my 2 little yorkies. Then I wash my hair, dry it, style it, get dressed and save the makeup for last. I’m out of my house by 6:30am for work. I get home at 6:00pm and then have classes after that. It makes for a long day, so on the weekend, I like to soak up all the relaxing I can!
